We Killed Smallpox

For this project, I considered people who may have some uncertainties about vaccination - due to a perception, being created by groups opposed to the practice, the vaccines are a risk to health. I used a blunt and bold style to aim at the counterarguments people may have heard in an attempt to reset the parameters of their internal debate. By discussing diseases unquestionably vanquished by vaccination, a viewer with mixed views on vaccination would hopefully consider the vast positive effects they have had when making health decisions.

A special emphasis was placed on family, to remind viewers that the effects of vaccination are more than just a personal health decision. I visualised the advertising as being displayed in a shopping centre, where it would be particularly visible to families – hopefully curious children would engage with parents on the topic. Even a firmly anti-vaccination parent would be hard pressed to convey an alternative hypothesis to account for the destruction of smallpox.
